If you source children’s sleepwear from China — nightgowns, footed pajamas, robes, loungewear — this is one of the most strictly regulated sub-categories in textiles. It isn’t the standard general-apparel flammability rule; it’s a specifically stricter standard for children’s sleepwear, and many of the failures happen precisely in the fabric choices and wash-testing details that get overlooked.
1. First, work out which standard actually applies to your product
The US has two dedicated children’s sleepwear standards: 16 CFR Part 1615 (sizes 0 through 6X, roughly preschool age) and 16 CFR Part 1616 (sizes 7 through 14, roughly school age). The critical first step is determining whether your product is “tight-fitting” or “loose-fitting”:

- Untreated pure polyester melts and drips when burning, and the molten drips can ignite cotton padding or lining underneath.

Why these problems often can’t be spotted at inspection: testing requires the fabric to be tested once in its original state, and again after 50 standard wash-and-dry cycles, with the stricter of the two results governing. - For napped/fleece/flannel products, require a test report specific to that fabric type, not one that was run on a standard woven fabric and applied generically.
- The test report must include results after the 50-wash cycle, not just the original-state pass — this is exactly the step most easily skipped by suppliers, and the one most likely to fail in real-world use.
- Confirm the Garment Production Unit (GPU) test covered seams and trim, not just the main body fabric — lace, fringe, and plush collar trim must meet the same flame-resistance grade; a failure in any single component fails the whole batch.
- Check that the label matches the actual test classification — the “FITS SNUGLY—NOT FLAME RESISTANT” warning is only valid on products genuinely meeting the tight-fitting size limits; applying it to a garment that’s actually loose-fitting is a mislabeling violation in its own right.
