If you source humidifiers from China, mist output (ml/hr) and coverage area are the two headline specs on every listing. There is no single dramatic fraud case that defines this category — but output is a real, testable performance claim, and coverage numbers are often stretched beyond what the output can support. 1. Output is a monitored spec — don’t over-read that as a special “crackdown”
China’s humidifier product standard, GB/T 23332, requires measured humidification output to be at least 90% of the rated (labeled) value. Market-surveillance spot checks on humidifiers do happen. Recent public results have more often flagged structure and safety items than a dedicated “false output labeling” campaign, but the test itself exists, and a unit that cannot meet 90% of its claimed ml/hr is non-compliant with the standard.
Treat this as a genuine, checkable specification — not as evidence of a unique, named enforcement wave. Ask for the number, then ask how it was measured.
2. A useful sizing check — treat it as a sanity range, not a statute
Coverage-area claims should scale with output in a roughly predictable way. Industry buying guides commonly convert Chinese, European, and US humidifier practice into a per-square-meter rule of thumb:
- China-oriented guidance is often cited at about 15–20 mL/hr per m²
- Stricter European-oriented guidance is often cited at about 18–22 mL/hr per m²
- US practice typically sits between those two
A concrete check: a 40 m² living room generally needs on the order of 450 mL/hr or more to raise humidity in a meaningful way under ordinary ceiling height and a reasonably closed room. A 200 mL/hr unit in that space will struggle. These figures are widely used selection ranges, not a sentence copied out of GB/T 23332, DIN, or AHAM. If a supplier’s coverage claim implies a per-square-meter output well below these ranges, ask them to explain the test conditions — ceiling height, airtightness, starting humidity, and runtime.
Open layouts, high ceilings, strong heating, and poor sealing all increase the output you actually need. A coverage number that ignores those variables is a marketing number.
3. Visible mist and actual humidification are not the same thing
This is worth understanding before you — or your customers — judge a unit as “underperforming” from appearance alone.
Ultrasonic units make a visible fog of droplets. Cooler rooms, drier air, and changes in how the transducer is driven can make that cloud look thinner even when the unit is still putting a similar amount of water into the air. The visual cue and the real humidification rate can diverge. A thinner fog in a cold room is not, by itself, proof of a defect or a false label.
What you should rely on is a measured output test (weight loss of water over time under stated conditions), not how dramatic the mist looks in a showroom video or a winter bedroom.
4. Normal degradation you should not mistake for a manufacturing defect
Real output decline over time is expected:
- Ultrasonic atomizing discs scale up with mineral deposits from hard water. Output falls if the disc is not cleaned. This is maintenance, not evidence the original unit was mislabeled.
- Evaporative wicks clog as minerals and dust build up, with the same effect.
A dilute vinegar soak for ultrasonic discs is the usual first remedy; wick replacement is the evaporative equivalent. If you are comparing a used sample or a returned unit against the labeled ml/hr, factor this in before you accuse the factory of fraud.
5. How to verify a legitimate output claim
- Request a third-party test report from a CMA/CNAS-accredited lab covering humidification output (加湿量). This is a standard test in China. A factory that sells electrical appliances at volume should be able to produce it. Check that the tested model matches the one you are buying.
- Cross-check claimed coverage against the output figure using the per-square-meter ranges above. A modest ml/hr rating paired with a very large room claim is the first thing to question.
- Ask what test conditions the output figure reflects — temperature, humidity, runtime, and whether the number is rated output or a peak marketing figure. A serious spec cites the lab, a report number, and notes that real coverage varies with ceiling height, airtightness, and room temperature.
- Do not judge performance by visible mist volume alone, especially in cooler rooms.
