Table Tennis Star Chiang Hung-chieh Confronts Ex-Wife in Japan: Ai Fukuhara Responds with Pre-Dawn Statement

Two years post-divorce, Taiwanese table tennis star Chiang Hung-chieh flies to Japan to confront ex-wife Ai Fukuhara, who in response, hastily released a 208-word statement in the wee hours of July 27th.

Chiang Hung-chieh divorced Japanese table tennis player Ai Fukuhara in 2021 and the two have had no contact since then, with family disputes remaining unresolved. Chiang announced a press conference in Tokyo at 2 pm on the 27th to face off with Fukuhara, accusing her of maliciously staying in Japan and cutting off communication. In response to this, Fukuhara issued a 208-word statement early in the morning on the 27th.

Fukuhara’s statement reveals that the family matter is currently being heard in courts in Japan and Hsinchu, Taiwan, and they were notified in court that they should not publicly discuss the content of the case. Ai Fukuhara’s appointed lawyer called on Chiang not to violate the judge’s request.

Full text of Ai Fukuhara’s statement:

“I was surprised to learn that Mr. Chiang Hung-chieh issued a statement on the evening of the 26th, announcing an international press conference today (27th), accusing his ex-wife, Ms. Ai Fukuhara, of maliciously losing contact while residing in Japan. I, as the attorney appointed by Ms. Fukuhara, am handling the family matter between Ms. Ai Fukuhara and Mr. Chiang Hung-chieh that is currently being heard in courts in Japan and Hsinchu, Taiwan. On March 27, 2023, at 10 am, the presiding judge at the Hsinchu District Court in Taiwan informed us that we should not publicly discuss the content of this family matter. I urge Mr. Chiang Hung-chieh not to violate the judge’s request and respectfully ask media friends to abide by the Child and Youth Welfare and Rights Protection Act and other regulations, and not to report or record content that may reveal or identify the identity of minors related to this family matter.”
