Chinese education mogul buys 20 white women’s eggs for surrogacy in U.S.

A Chinese chat record of an online group was circulated on the Chinese Internet on May 6, which shows that Wang Huiwu, president of China’s Hope Education Group and founder of the computer training organization “Mayflower”, bought 20 top eggs in the United States, paired them with his own sperms, and produced 20 female embryos. According to the whistleblower, Wang Huiwu chose 20 senior eggs from “different fields, white skin, good-looking, light-haired models or PhD in finance”.

The whistleblower also revealed that 10 mixed-race female babies have been born so far. “The eldest daughter is almost two years old. The ninth and tenth were just born in April this year and 8 children have been brought back to China. There are still 10 embryos frozen, because can’t find a suitable surrogate for the time being”.

Wang Huiwu

Public information shows that Wang Huiwu is from Changle Village, Yucheng Township, Jianyang City, Sichuan Province, China. On the afternoon of May 6, multiple interviewees in Yucheng Township told the reporter that they had heard the name of Wang Huiwu. The Changle village party secretary told the reporter, “Wang Huiwu went out for business when he was young, and he didn’t have much time to come back. At present, only his parents live in his hometown. His parents are in their 70s or 80s and their health is not very good.”

Did Wang Huiwu actually have 10 girls surrogated in the US? On the afternoon of May 6, Wang Huiwu’s father responded to the reporter through the village party secretary: “I’m in the hospital, so it’s not convenient to talk about it.”

The relevant staff of the Yucheng Township Government of Jianyang City replied to the reporter: “Wang Huiwu has been doing business outside. We don’t know much about him. We don’t know whether the content in the chat log is true or not.” Yucheng Township People’s Livelihood Service Office 1 A staff member told the reporter: “I don’t know this very well. We haven’t received any report from anyone, nor have we discovered this situation.”

The reporter tried to contact Wang Huiwu many times, but no one answered the phone. Regarding the online rumors that Wang Huiwu gave birth to 10 children through surrogacy, the front desk staff of Hope Education Group told the media on May 6, “These are all rumors.”

White donors were required

According to the whistleblower, Wang Huiwu chose 20 high-end eggs from “different fields, white skin, good-looking, light-haired models or Ph.D. in finance”. The whistleblower said that the general egg price is between 20,000 and 30,000 US dollars, and Wang’s purchase price is more than 45,000 US dollars, and Wang emphasized the requirement for “white donors.”

After the reporter verified the surrogacy market in the United States, it was found that the situation was basically consistent. Generally speaking, the surrogacy industry is divided into two parts, one is the egg donation part, which means buying eggs and performing in vitro fertilization; the other is the pregnancy part, which means finding a mother who is willing to surrogate for embryo transfer, pregnancy, and production.

The commercial activity of donating eggs is legal in most states in the United States, but pregnancy is only legal in some states. In legal states, the law protects the “customer” when the child’s parent, the “client,” has a dispute with the surrogate mother.

According to the whistleblower, when buying eggs, Wang Huiwu asked the egg provider to be “white in color, good-looking, and light in hair color.” According to the official website of the US egg bank EGG Donor America, white-woman eggs and Latino eggs are “popular ones.” On the contrary, Jewish, Indian and Asian are the types of eggs that need “plus money”. As for the “good-looking”, it is up to the client to judge by himself –it can be decided after meeting with the egg donor.

The second is price. The official website of the egg bank shows that egg donors receive an average of US$5,000 to US$10,000 in remuneration. The stricter the requirements, the higher the price and the harder it is to find suitable donors.

According to research data collected by the US National Institutes of Health, egg donors who are “sought after” and “with specific characteristics” will charge more. The cost of using such eggs for in vitro fertilization is more than US$40,000, which is in line with the whistleblower’s saying of 45,000 US dollars. And in vitro fertilization generally requires a set of eggs (about 6-8), plus the cost of examination and fertilization process, Wang Huiwu may spend more than US$250,000 to buy eggs for a single child.

The revelation also mentioned that Wang Huiwu required white pregnant mothers. According to data provided by multiple surrogacy agencies, the cost of gestational surrogacy ranges from about 100,000 to 150,000 US dollars. If a white pregnant mother is required, the remuneration and process costs may require an additional 50,000 US dollars.

Egg donors are mostly college students

According to independent reporting agency Passblue, in the United States, egg donors are mostly students with heavy student loans and young people who have just graduated.

According to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States, 54% of American college students have student loans. The total student loan debt is approximately US$1.6 trillion. Among all adults in the United States, about 14% have failed to pay off their student loan debts, of which 6.5% have actually defaulted, and the average student loan debt is $37,500 per person.

According to the bank’s data, people with advanced degrees tend to accumulate higher debt. Among adults with student loans of more than $100,000, 16% have defaulted. There are two possibilities for a loan of more than 100,000 US dollars: one is that the study period is longer, and it is likely to be a graduate or doctoral graduate; the second is to study at a prestigious school and need to pay higher tuition.

In either case, it is not impossible to find a PhD in finance from the 16% that has defaulted, and it is possible to get her eggs with a repayment sufficient to repay the loan. Other requirements such as “models, musicians, and good-looking” are not difficult to achieve.

Served in 25 companies

According to the reporter’s inquiry, as the core figure of this exposure, Wang Huiwu is a veteran of the education industry in China.

In 1994, Wang Huiwu, who graduated from Sichuan Jianyang Normal School, gave up his job of being a primary school teacher and rode a bicycle to Chengdu alone. In 1999, Wang Huiwu founded “Mayflower” and expanded its business scope from operating a computer training school to a secondary vocational school, and expanded its franchise model throughout Sichuan to become the largest IT training institution in Sichuan, China.

In 2007, Wang Huiwu led “Mayflower” to join Huaxi Hope Group, based on which Huaxi Hope established Sichuan Hope Education Industry Company, with Huaxi Hope assigning the chairman and Wang Huiwu holding 38.96% of the shares as director and general manager, gradually making “Hope Education ” one of the largest private education groups in Sichuan. According to Tianyancha information, Wang Huiwu has worked in 25 companies, and has served as the legal representative of 10 companies.

Several interviewees told the reporter that Wang Huiwu has two sons who are about 20 years old. The source revealed that one of the sons has graduated from university and the other is studying abroad, accompanied by his mother.

According to the whistleblower, the eight children who have returned to China are all taken care of by the Guangdong Yuesao, because “the children have to learn Cantonese and go to kindergarten in Hong Kong when they are 2 years old.”

Probably due to the rumors of the surrogacy incident, Hope Education’s share price plunged 11.76% to HK$2.25 per share on May 6.
