Man Hospitalized for Severe Allergic Reaction to Silkworm Pupae

Silkworm pupae, considered an “acquired taste” by many, are equally loved by adventurous foodies. Recently, a man from Shanghai was rushed to the hospital in shock, exhibiting signs of nausea, vomiting, and a full-body red rash after consuming silkworm pupae for dinner. After treatment, his condition improved. Doctors indicate that the high protein content in silkworm pupae can cause abnormal immune reactions in individuals with allergic tendencies.

As reported by Chinese media “The Paper,” the 30-year-old man consumed silkworm pupae for dinner on July 20th. He suddenly began feeling nauseous, vomiting, and his body turned red during the middle of the night. His roommate promptly rushed him to the hospital as his consciousness gradually faded.

It is reported that the patient’s blood pressure was significantly low when on the ambulance. Emergency personnel treated him with glucocorticoid drugs for anti-allergy and shock management. Upon hospitalization, doctors stabilized his condition by performing a series of anti-allergic treatments, including electrocardiographic monitoring, establishing an intravenous line, and providing oxygen.

Dr. Sun Jie, a medical practitioner specializing in emergency and intensive care at Pudong New District People’s Hospital, explains that silkworm pupae are rich in proteins. However, these proteins are foreign to the human body and can cause allergic reactions in certain individuals. Common allergic reactions include dizziness, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rashes, a runny nose, and sneezing. A minority of patients may experience excessive tear production and itchy eyes.

The doctor also emphasizes that severe protein allergies can damage the human nervous system, leading to symptoms such as respiratory difficulties, chest tightness, and even shock. Therefore, he advises extreme caution when consuming silkworm pupae to avoid unnecessary harm.
