If you source electronics from China — especially anything with wireless functionality (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, routers, smart devices) — to sell in the US, you may have been alarmed by headlines about “the US banning all Chinese testing labs.” This is genuinely happening, but a lot of coverage has overstated the timeline — it’s a long way from an immediate ban. This article gives you the accurate timeline, who’s actually affected, and how Chinese suppliers and labs are already responding.

1. First, the correction: this was a vote to advance a proposal, not a final ban

On April 30, 2026, the FCC voted 5-0 to advance a proposal — this was not a final, effective ban. The real timeline:

  • After the vote, there’s a 60-to-90-day public comment period.
  • Only after that comment period does the FCC draft a final rule — most estimates suggest this won’t happen before 2027 at the earliest.
  • Only once the final rule takes effect does the 2-year transition period begin (not counted from the April 30 vote) — meaning the true final deadline could land around 2029.

In other words: there’s likely a window of roughly three years between now and any actual point at which labs stop being usable. If you panic-switch away from a Chinese lab you’re currently working with because of these headlines, you may well be doing unnecessary work for nothing.
