Passengers Threatened Over Maotai Authentication: Police Probe Counterfeit Alcohol

According to netizens, while traveling in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province, earlier, at a Maotai liquor tasting hall owned by Wuliangye, a passenger purchased Maotai liquor. After paying, the passenger attempted to scan the QR code to verify the authenticity of the Maotai liquor but was threatened by the shop owner saying, “If you dare to call 315, I will make sure you regret it.”

The female passenger stated that on February 17th, she and her friend visited a Wuliangye Maotai liquor tasting hall in Xi’an and purchased two bottles of Feitian Maotai, priced at 2750 yuan each, totaling 5500 yuan. After scanning and paying, and as the Maotai liquor was being packaged, she requested the shop to record the bottle codes and issue a receipt to authenticate the purchased Maotai liquor. However, she was rudely refused by a male staff member who snatched her phone and the liquor, even went as far as closing the door and making threatening phone calls to acquaintances, saying, “If you dare to call 12345, I will make sure you regret it.” (12345 is the consumer complaint hotline in Mainland China)

Faced with the shop staff’s arrogant attitude and aggressive behavior, the female passenger chose to call the police. However, before the police arrived, the shop staff continued to threaten her, aggressively stating, “Even if you report to the heavens, it won’t help,” “Do you want to die? If you dare to report to the police, if you dare to contact relevant departments, I will definitely have someone come to deal with you. Look, I can gather how many people to support me, I will ruin you.”

Shortly after, acquaintances summoned by the staff arrived, and there was another altercation between the two sides, during which the two bottles of Maotai liquor in the female passenger’s hands were smashed, and the red caps with crucial information were hidden by the other party. The conflict ceased only when the police arrived. After the incident, the police and market supervision department intervened.

After investigation by the public security department, two individuals, Fang and Zhang, recently purchased two bottles of Maotai liquor from a tobacco and alcohol store operated by Niu (male, 61 years old). When they requested Niu to transcribe the anti-counterfeiting codes and issue receipts, Niu refused and threatened Fang and Zhang. Subsequently, Niu, Niu’s son (male, 35 years old), and Meng (female, 60 years old, Niu’s wife) attempted to retrieve the two bottles of liquor from Fang, during which Fang was dragged to the ground and the two bottles of liquor were smashed.

The Xi’an Municipal Public Security Bureau Kangfu Branch announced that the actions of Niu, Niu’s son, and Meng are suspected of criminal offenses. The three individuals have been taken coercive measures in accordance with the law. Two individuals have been criminally detained, one person has been released on bail pending trial. Further investigation into the shop’s suspected sale of counterfeit alcohol and other issues is underway.

The market supervision department has sealed the Maotai liquor sold by the involved tobacco and alcohol store and has initiated an investigation, which will be handled in accordance with the law and regulations. Currently, the implicated store has been closed, with a seal bearing the inscription “Kangfu Branch Criminal Investigation Brigade” placed on its front door.
