If you source power strips, extension cords, chargers, or power banks from China to sell in the US, this is a category you may be underestimating. Recent recall records from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) show these products keep getting recalled for the same handful of reasons: ungrounded enclosures causing electrocution, missing overcurrent protection causing fires, and overheating lithium batteries. Using several recent real cases, this article covers the three most common hazards in this category, why they happen, and what to check before you order.
1. Real cases: the same type of product, the same problems, again and again
- HEZI brand power strips (recalled January 15, 2026, about 1,320 units, manufactured by Dongguan Keben Electrical Appliance Co Ltd): the metal enclosure was ungrounded, posing a serious electrocution hazard if energized, sold on Amazon, eBay, Kmart, and Sears.
- CCCEI brand power strips (sold by Middle Way Electronics from April 2024 through January 2026): lacked supplementary overcurrent protection, creating a fire risk if overloaded, potentially causing serious injury or death from smoke inhalation and burns. The retailer refused an acceptable recall, so CPSC issued a direct consumer warning.
- Extension cords (“pigtail cables”) from Shenzhen Shijingjie Network Technology: when one end is plugged into a generator, the exposed prongs on the other end can become energized — an electrocution risk — and the cords’ short length encourages placing the generator too close to the home, adding a carbon monoxide poisoning risk on top. One product, three stacked hazards.

2. Why this keeps happening: three shared technical root causes
Across these cases, nearly every recall in this category traces back to one of three causes:
- Ungrounded / insufficiently insulated enclosures. A metal-cased product without proper grounding means that if the internal wiring degrades or shorts, the enclosure itself becomes energized — anyone who touches it can be shocked.
- Missing overcurrent protection. A compliant power strip needs an overcurrent protection device (like a circuit breaker) that cuts power automatically when the load exceeds rating. Omitting this part cuts cost significantly — but the moment a user plugs in several high-draw devices at once, the strip itself becomes an ignition source.
- Inadequate lithium battery safety design. Power banks and chargers with poorly designed protection circuits or low-quality cells are prone to catching fire during charging, discharging, or overheating.
What these three share: they’re all invisible. You can’t spot them by inspecting the product’s appearance at delivery — a power strip may test fine when first plugged in; the problem often only surfaces under prolonged use, overload, or extreme conditions.
3. A trap many buyers fall into: a Chinese domestic-market certificate is not a US one
Here’s a distinction worth understanding plainly, because it’s easy to get wrong. Plugs, sockets, and power strips sold within China’s own domestic market fall under China’s mandatory CCC certification (China Compulsory Certification, sometimes called “3C”) — this is a real, legitimate safety scheme, but it tests against Chinese national standards. It has no bearing on whether the product meets UL 1363 (the US standard for relocatable power taps) or UL 498 (the standard covering the plugs and receptacles themselves).
A supplier who shows you a CCC certificate isn’t lying to you — but if you’re shipping to the US, that certificate simply answers the wrong question. Don’t accept a Chinese domestic compliance report as evidence of US compliance; ask specifically for UL testing against the US standards, not just “we’re certified.”
4. What to check before you order
- Get the certification right — and understand what a real one actually implies. US-market power strips are generally expected to meet UL 1363 (Relocatable Power Taps) plus UL 498 for the plug/receptacle components; chargers and adapters fall under UL 62368-1, with UL 1310 specifically covering Class 2 battery chargers and power supplies. A genuine UL Listing isn’t just a one-time sample test — UL requires an initial factory inspection (IPI) before certification and annual follow-up inspections afterward. That means a real UL-certified factory has an ongoing audit history. Asking a supplier directly whether they can provide records of their UL factory follow-up inspections is a strong verification signal that’s harder to fake than a paper certificate.
- Don’t confuse UL with FCC — you likely need both, and they cover different things. FCC certification is a US federal legal requirement covering electromagnetic compatibility; UL is not a legal mandate but is a de facto market-access requirement, since most retailers and marketplaces won’t carry uncertified electrical products. A supplier fluent in one but vague on the other is a sign their compliance program may be incomplete.
- Explicitly require an overcurrent protection device, and ask for internal construction diagrams or teardown photos confirming a breaker or fuse is actually installed — not just a claim of “protection included” on the marketing page.
- For metal-enclosure products, require a grounding test report. This is the piece most easily skipped, and the most dangerous to skip.

- Be wary of unusually cheap power strips and extension cords. The compliance cost in this category sits mainly in the overcurrent-protection component and the grounding design — a quote far below comparable products likely means one or both were cut.
5. What a recall costs you
As with toys and jewellery, the consequences run well beyond a simple return: in the US, the importer or brand typically bears the recall costs, CPSC penalties, and marketplace delisting — Amazon in particular treats fire/electrocution-risk products harshly and can suspend the store outright. If the product causes injury or property damage (as in the CCCEI fire-risk case), civil liability follows. And the product and company name stay permanently in CPSC’s public recall database, searchable by anyone.
The bottom line
Power strips, extension cords, and chargers look like simple products, but they’re among the most frequently recalled categories at the US CPSC — and the recurring causes are poor grounding, missing overcurrent protection, and inadequate lithium battery design. These hazards can’t be spotted by inspecting the goods on arrival; they require proper certification verification (and knowing that a Chinese CCC certificate isn’t a substitute for US UL testing), teardown checks, and grounding tests.
